In 2011, at the age of 86, Leroy Luetscher had just finished trimming plants outside his Phoenix, Arizona residence when he accidentally dropped his shears.

Attempting to retrieve them, he stumbled and fell, landing face-first onto the shears' handle, which impaled his eye socket and extended down into his neck.

Luetscher, overwhelmed by the severe pain and drenched in blood, discovered the shears protruding from his face upon touching it.

Unsure of the state of his eyeball, he reflected on the excruciating pain which overshadowed his fear of death, noting that a slight alteration in the shears' trajectory could have been fatal.

He managed to control the bleeding with his T-shirt and called his partner for help, who then summoned emergency services. Medical imaging later revealed that the shears' handle had lodged six inches into his skull, perilously close to the carotid artery in his neck.

Surgeons were able to extract the shears and save Luetscher's eye, reconstructing his orbital floor with a titanium plate. To prevent infection, he was administered antibiotics for a 20-day period, ultimately recovering from the horrific accident.
