He was the Founder of Abiola Farms, Abiola Bookshops, Radio Communications Nigeria, Wonder Bakeries, Concord Press, Concord Airlines, Summit Oil International Ltd, Africa Ocean Lines, Habib Bank, Decca W.A. Ltd and Abiola FC. He was the Chairman of G15 Business council.

He was the President of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), Patron of the Kwame Nkrumah Foundation, Patron of the WEB Du Bois foundation, Trustee of the Martin Luther King Foundation and Director of the International Press Institute (IPI).

He won the 1993 Nigerian Presidential Election, but he never assumed office as the election was annulled by the military regime.

He was arrested and later died in 1998.
